What is Trauma-informed therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach to therapy that takes into account the impact of trauma on a person's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Traumatic experiences can be acute, complex, and may also include any life experience that creates significant distress. This approach recognizes that traumatic experiences can have a profound and lasting effect on individuals, and that these experiences may continue to affect them long after the initial trauma has occurred.

Trauma-informed therapy is characterized by a focus on safety, empowerment, and collaboration. In utilizing this approach, I seek to create a safe and supportive environment for clients, where they can feel empowered to work through their trauma at their own pace. I work collaboratively with clients to develop a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on their lives, and to develop strategies for coping with its effects.

Some of the key principles of trauma-informed therapy include:

  • Safety - creating a safe and supportive environment for clients to work through their trauma

  • Trustworthiness - building trust between therapist and client

  • Choice - empowering clients to make choices about their treatment

  • Collaboration - working collaboratively with clients to develop treatment plans and goals

  • Empowerment - supporting clients in their efforts to regain control and mastery over their lives

  • Cultural sensitivity - recognizing and respecting the cultural background and experiences of clients.

Overall, trauma-informed therapy seeks to help individuals heal from the effects of trauma, and to move forward with their lives in a positive and meaningful way.
